Three measures to keep separate

Battery percentage is one signal; symptoms, heat and supported diagnostics matter too.
  • State of charge: the percentage available now.
  • Maximum capacity or health: an estimate of stored energy compared with a reference state.
  • Cycle count: accumulated use equal to full charge cycles, not simply the number of times plugged in.

These figures are estimates and are not displayed in the same way on every phone.

What accelerates ageing

Heat is one of the most important controllable factors. Long periods at very high charge, deep discharge, fast charging under hot conditions and heavy use while charging can add stress. The practical aim is not a perfect ritual; it is to avoid repeated extreme conditions.

Why runtime changes without battery failure

A brighter screen, new app, weak signal, background synchronisation, system update or restored backup can increase power use. Diagnose a sudden change before paying for a battery. A gradual decline over years is more consistent with normal ageing.

Manufacturer examples are not universal standards

Apple publishes model-specific design expectations for capacity retention and shows battery-health information on supported iPhones. Samsung provides battery status through Samsung Members on supported Galaxy devices. Google exposes battery-health and charging features on supported Pixel models. Use the exact model guidance.
