There is no single UK warranty period for every phone. The answer depends on the exact manufacturer, seller, device status, purchase region and type of promise.
Check four separate timelines

| Timeline | What it controls |
|---|---|
| Manufacturer warranty | The manufacturer’s voluntary repair or replacement promise |
| Seller or refurbisher warranty | The seller’s additional contractual promise |
| Repair warranty | Cover for a specific replacement part or repair service |
| Consumer rights | Legal remedies against a trader for goods that did not conform to the contract |
Do not turn “one year” into a universal rule
Many products are advertised with a limited period, but the exact start date, transferability and scope must be checked. A used phone can have no remaining manufacturer warranty, a seller warranty, both or neither.
Warranty expiry does not settle fault responsibility
GOV.UK explains that a customer can retain statutory rights even if a warranty or guarantee has expired. That does not mean every old fault must be repaired free: timing, expected durability, evidence and the circumstances still matter.
Record the dates at purchase
- delivery date;
- manufacturer coverage end date;
- seller warranty end date;
- extended plan start and end;
- repair warranty period after any work.
Check the four timelines
Check the serial number or proof of purchase through the issuer’s official route, then save the result with the receipt.
Start date and pauses
Coverage may start on purchase, delivery or first activation, depending on the terms. A repair does not automatically restart the full original period. Some providers extend cover for the repaired part or for a minimum period after service; others continue only the remaining term.
Transfer to a second owner
Do not assume a warranty is either always transferable or always tied to the first buyer. Check the issuer’s current rules and the proof required. A seller’s own refurbished warranty may differ from any remaining manufacturer coverage.
Duration is not quality
A long warranty with narrow exclusions and a weak remedy may be less useful than shorter, clear cover from a reliable provider. Compare what happens when a claim is accepted, not just the number of months.
Time limits for legal claims are not warranty periods
References to limitation periods do not mean a phone must last that long or that every failure is automatically the retailer’s responsibility. Product durability, timing, evidence and remedy must still be assessed. Avoid presenting a jurisdiction’s claim deadline as a free multi-year warranty.
