Phone insurance is sold through several channels, but the channel does not determine the quality of cover. Compare the policy wording, regulated insurer, excess and remedy.

Four common routes

Check the exact cover, exclusions, evidence and complaint route.
TypePotential advantageMain risk
Stand-alone gadget policyFocused cover and direct comparisonEligibility, exclusions and replacement quality vary
Packaged bank accountSeveral benefits for one account feePaying for unused benefits or misunderstanding household eligibility
Home contents insuranceExisting relationship and broad household protectionHigh excess or no away-from-home cover
Retailer or network add-onConvenient at purchaseDecision made under sales pressure without comparison

Not every protection product is insurance

An extended warranty, service plan or care programme may cover breakdown or repairs without being the same type of insurance contract. Check the legal provider, complaint route and exact insured events instead of relying on words such as “protection” or “care”.

Use the same seven tests

  1. Exact phone eligibility.
  2. Damage, liquid, theft, loss and breakdown.
  3. Excess for each event.
  4. Claim and value limits.
  5. Evidence and notification deadlines.
  6. Repair or replacement standard.
  7. Cancellation and complaint route.

Choose the cover route

Use Comparing Insurance Options to normalise the costs across channels.

Network and retailer cover

Cover offered during checkout can be convenient, but convenience is not a quality measure. Ask whether it is optional, when it begins, whether it overlaps a manufacturer warranty and how to cancel. Keep the policy separate from the handset and airtime documents so that ending one agreement is not assumed to end the others.

Family and multi-device policies

Multi-device cover can reduce administration, but check shared claim limits, eligible relationships and maximum value per device. One high-value claim can affect the remaining cover available to the household.

Travel and worldwide cover

“Worldwide” can still contain trip-duration limits, excluded countries, residence conditions and reporting requirements. Travel insurance may include gadgets, but its excess and single-item limit can be unsuitable for a modern phone.

Breakdown cover

Some policies cover electrical or mechanical breakdown only after another warranty ends. Others exclude breakdown entirely. Check whether battery deterioration is treated as wear and whether the phone must be economically repairable.

Sources and fact-checking

Facts checked: 25 July 2026. The cover attached to a bank account, home policy, network plan or stand-alone product can change. Check each current policy document rather than relying on the sales channel.
