A stand-alone policy can provide focused phone cover, but provider names, prices and underwriting arrangements change. Compare the current documents rather than relying on a permanent “best provider” list.
Check the regulated chain

Record the insurer, seller, administrator and complaints contact. Search the Financial Services Register using the exact legal name and reference number shown in the documents. A matching brand name alone is not enough.
Compare the remedy
- authorised repair, nominated repairer or cash settlement;
- new, refurbished or equivalent replacement;
- parts standard and repair warranty;
- courier process and data-handling instructions;
- time limits and temporary-device arrangements;
- what happens if the exact model is unavailable.
Compare the cost of one likely claim
Use the premium for the period you expect to keep the phone, then add the relevant excess. Do not use the lowest advertised excess if your most likely event carries a different one. Check whether premiums continue after a total-loss claim and whether a replacement changes the insured device automatically.
Provider questions worth asking in writing
- Is this exact phone eligible based on age and purchase source?
- Does the policy cover loss as well as theft?
- What replacement condition is promised?
- Are accessories, SIM costs or unauthorised use covered?
- Who handles complaints if the repair is poor?
Create a provider shortlist
Put the answers beside bank-account and home-insurance alternatives in Comparing Insurance Options.
Avoid a static provider ranking
Premiums and terms can vary by phone, age, purchase route, postcode and cover selected. Underwriters and administrators can also change. A provider comparison must therefore be dated and based on the current documents for the exact quote, not on a permanent league table.
Inspect the Insurance Product Information Document
The summary document is useful for identifying broad cover and major exclusions, but it does not replace the full wording. Read them together. If the sales page, summary and full policy appear inconsistent, obtain clarification in writing before buying.
Replacement quality questions
- Can the replacement be refurbished?
- How is equivalent value determined?
- What battery or cosmetic standard applies?
- What warranty covers the repair or replacement?
- Can the provider make a cash settlement instead?
Assess complaint evidence, not star ratings alone
Look for repeated recent issues involving the same stage of the process, such as courier loss, repair quality or ownership evidence. Also check whether reviewers are discussing the insurer, administrator or unrelated retailer. Reviews are context, not a substitute for policy terms.
