Apple Trade In can provide credit connected with a new purchase or an Apple Gift Card, depending on the device, purchase and payment route. Values and eligibility change, so this page explains the checks rather than quoting a permanent price.

How the current process works

Document the phone, protect the payment and make the handover traceable.

Apple asks for the device and condition, gives an estimated value, and verifies the phone after in-store handover or receipt. The way value is returned depends on what you buy and how you pay. Apple’s current UK page explains when credit returns to the original payment method and when a Gift Card may be used.

Before accepting the estimate

  • Confirm the exact model and storage.
  • Check whether the estimate is linked to a new purchase.
  • Understand what happens if verified condition differs.
  • Check the timing of credit and any financing interaction.
  • Compare the estimate with at least one cash buyer and realistic private-sale net value.

Prepare the device

Apple instructs users to back up and erase the device, remove account locks and suspend or remove mobile service. For Android devices sent to Apple, signing out of the account matters to trade-in eligibility. Apple’s current preparation page also says not to include unrequested cases, cables or adapters because they may not be returned.

If the verified value changes

Read the current order and trade-in communications before deciding what to do. The consequence can depend on whether the value was applied to a purchase, returned to the original payment method or issued as a Gift Card. Do not assume that cancelling the new purchase automatically cancels every trade-in step, or that an already-sent device can be retrieved on demand.

Keep a complete record

Save the estimate, order number, device identifiers, condition photographs, dispatch tracking and verification result. This is particularly important where a trade-in is connected with monthly payments or the value is applied after receipt.

When it is a sensible route

Apple Trade In can be sensible when you have independently chosen the Apple purchase, value convenience, and understand the payment method. It is not automatically the best cash return, and an Apple Gift Card should not be valued as cash if it causes spending you would not otherwise make.

Check the current terms

Trade-in values, accepted devices, payment treatment and preparation instructions can change. Check Apple’s current UK terms immediately before acting.
