Phone insurance included with a fee-paying bank account can be good value when the complete package suits you. It is poor value when the account is kept only for a benefit that is narrower than expected.
Calculate the package honestly

Use the full monthly account fee unless you would independently buy and use the other benefits. Do not divide the fee between travel insurance, breakdown cover and phone insurance merely to make each one appear cheap.
Eligibility checks
- who in the household is covered;
- whether a partner must live at the same address;
- phone age and value limits;
- purchase or ownership evidence;
- registration or notification requirements;
- number of phones and claims allowed;
- loss, theft, damage and breakdown definitions.
Identify the actual insurer
The bank may provide the account, while a separate insurer and administrator handle claims. Save the policy schedule and contact the correct organisation. If a claim or sale complaint is unresolved, the formal complaint normally starts with the financial business involved.
Common mistakes
- assuming every family phone is covered;
- failing to register a device where the current terms require it;
- counting old benefits that have since changed;
- overlooking an excess or replacement-value cap;
- keeping an unsuitable account because switching feels difficult.

Household cover needs precise definitions
Some packaged accounts cover only the account holder; others may cover a partner or dependent children under defined conditions. Business phones, phones owned by an employer and devices used mainly by someone outside the covered household may be treated differently. Use the definitions, not family assumptions.
Registration and proof
Check whether the phone must be registered before a claim and what information is needed. Even where advance registration is not required, keep proof of ownership and the IMEI. If the phone was a gift, retain evidence showing both purchase and transfer to the user.
Review the account annually
Account fees, insurers, excesses and included benefits can change. Recalculate the package when the bank issues new terms and after replacing the phone. A package that suited an older handset may not cover a newer device above its value limit.
If the account was unsuitable when sold
A complaint about the sale of a packaged account is different from a complaint about a rejected phone claim. Identify whether the issue is eligibility, disclosure, claims handling or repair quality, and address it to the correct business.
