The visible brand may be the seller or administrator rather than the insurer that carries the risk. Compare the complete chain before buying: seller, insurer, administrator, repair network and complaint route.

Compare provider types, not advertising claims

Five identities to record

  1. The brand collecting the premium.
  2. The regulated insurer.
  3. The claims administrator.
  4. The repair or replacement partner.
  5. The organisation responsible for complaints.

These may be one company or several. Save the current policy documents rather than assuming the commercial arrangement will remain unchanged.

Identify the regulated chain

Shortlist policies by cover and total claim cost first. Only then compare service features and reviews. A popular brand cannot make an excluded event payable.

Do not confuse brand familiarity with insurer strength

A bank, mobile network or retailer can sell cover under a familiar name while another regulated insurer underwrites it. The policy schedule and Financial Services Register entry are more useful than the logo. Check that contact details and permissions match the documents you received.

Provider comparison order

  1. Confirm the exact events and phone are eligible.
  2. Calculate premiums and the relevant excess.
  3. Compare repair and replacement wording.
  4. Review evidence and reporting deadlines.
  5. Check complaints and cancellation routes.

Only after these checks should service reviews or promotional extras influence the decision.

Sources and fact-checking
