Liquid-damage repair is less predictable than replacing one known part. A phone may need cleaning, board work and several modules, while corrosion can continue after an apparently successful recovery.

Ask what the repair is intended to achieve

A useful repair decision starts with diagnosis, written scope and post-repair checks.
  • Data recovery: make the phone work long enough to extract data.
  • Functional repair: return the device to normal use with a stated warranty.
  • Diagnostic clean: remove contamination and assess what remains faulty.

These are different services. A data-recovery success is not proof that the phone will be reliable for another year.

Use a liquid-damage decision matrix

DataBackup existsData is irreplaceable — prioritise recovery, not normal repair economics

Illustrative cost decision

Illustrative figures only. A £90 diagnostic and clean plus a possible £180 board repair is not the same as a fixed £270 repair. If the £90 is payable even when the phone cannot be restored, compare that downside with a suitable replacement and any data value.

Insurance route

If accidental liquid damage is covered, compare the excess, claim limit and replacement standard with private repair. Do not pay for irreversible work before checking whether the insurer requires its own assessment.

After a repair

Do not assume the original IP rating has been restored. Ask what sealing work was completed and whether any written water-resistance guarantee exists. Maintain backups because corrosion-related faults can reappear.

Ask for two prices when uncertainty is high

Request the cost of diagnosis/cleaning and the maximum authorised repair total as separate figures. If the shop cannot know the full scope before opening the phone, agree when it must stop and contact you. An open-ended “we will try” service should be priced as an attempt, not a guaranteed repair.

Data value is not phone value

A phone worth £150 may contain data worth far more to its owner. In that case, the rational first service can be data recovery even when normal repair is uneconomic. Conversely, if a current backup exists, do not let fear of data loss justify unlimited repair spending.

Check the repair warranty closely

Liquid-damage warranties are often narrower than warranties for a single replaced part because unseen corrosion can remain. Ask which repaired functions are covered, for how long, and whether later board failure is excluded.

When to retire the phone after recovery

If the device was restored only to extract data, do not return it to critical banking, authentication or work use without a clear reliability assessment. A phone that powers on is not necessarily a dependable daily device.
