Phone Warranty

A phone warranty is a written promise with its own scope and time limit. It is not the same as insurance, and it does not remove the retailer’s legal responsibilities for faulty goods.

A phone warranty is a written promise with its own scope and time limit. It is not the same as insurance, and it does not remove the retailer’s legal responsibilities for faulty goods.

Identify the provider

Check the exact cover, exclusions, evidence and complaint route.

The relevant promise may come from:

  • the manufacturer;
  • the retailer;
  • a refurbisher;
  • an extended-warranty provider;
  • a repairer covering its own parts and labour.

These promises can overlap but are not interchangeable. Record who issued the warranty and who must receive the claim.

What a warranty normally asks you to prove

  • the phone and serial or IMEI;
  • the purchase date and seller;
  • the fault and when it began;
  • that the phone is within the warranty period;
  • that an exclusion such as accidental or liquid damage does not apply.

A receipt is useful, but GOV.UK notes that a retailer may accept other proof of purchase, such as a bank statement or packaging. The evidence required by a manufacturer’s voluntary warranty can be different, so read its terms.

Warranty versus retailer rights

If a trader sold a faulty phone, the Consumer Rights Act route is against that trader. A warranty can be convenient, but a seller should not use the existence or expiry of a manufacturer warranty as a complete answer to a valid statutory claim.

Choose the detailed route

Fault, damage and wear are different

A failed component can be a warranty issue; a cracked screen after a drop is normally accidental damage; gradual battery decline may be wear. The visible symptom does not always reveal the cause. A provider may inspect the phone and reject a claim if evidence points to an excluded event, but it should explain the decision rather than relying on a vague reference to “physical damage”.

Repairs can affect future coverage

Before using an independent repairer, check whether the warranty excludes damage caused by unauthorised work. A warranty should not be described as automatically void in every respect merely because a phone was opened; the actual terms and relationship between the work and later fault matter. Obtain a written diagnosis and parts information from any repairer.

Used and refurbished phones

A used phone may have remaining manufacturer cover, a separate seller warranty or neither. A refurbished seller’s warranty should state battery treatment, excluded cosmetic issues, replacement condition and return postage. Do not assume that a grade such as “Excellent” expands the warranty.

Sources and fact-checking

Facts checked: 25 July 2026. This is general UK consumer guidance, not legal advice. The correct route depends on who sold the phone, what was promised and when the fault appeared.
