An online phone purchase can involve two separate questions: whether you are cancelling because you changed your mind, and whether the phone is faulty, damaged or not as described. Keep those routes separate because the deadlines, return costs and remedies are not identical.

Before the order is placed

Keep the seller, contract, evidence and remedy route clearly separated.

A distance seller should provide clear pre-contract information, including its identity and contact details, the goods or services, total price, delivery arrangements, contract duration, cancellation process and conditions for ending the agreement. For a handset-and-airtime deal, save the contract summary, full contract information and device-finance documents separately.

Changing your mind

For most online goods purchases from a trader, the customer can tell the trader that they are cancelling within 14 days after delivery. They normally then have another 14 days to return the goods. This is not a universal right for every product or transaction, so check the applicable terms and statutory exceptions.

SituationPractical route
You changed your mindUse the distance-cancellation procedure and meet its notification and return deadlines.
The phone is faulty or misdescribedState the defect and rely on the appropriate goods remedy, not only the retailer's goodwill policy.
You bought from a private seller through a platformDo not assume trader cancellation rights apply; identify the legal seller first.
The checkout created airtime or finance agreementsAsk how cancellation affects each agreement and any service already supplied.

How far may you inspect the phone?

You may handle goods to establish their nature, characteristics and functioning, broadly as you might in a shop. The trader may be able to reduce a change-of-mind refund for diminished value caused by handling beyond what was necessary. Keep packaging and accessories, avoid unnecessary wear and do not perform irreversible modifications while deciding.

Return postage and delivery risk

For a change-of-mind return, the consumer may have to pay the direct return cost if the trader gave the required information. For rejected faulty goods, the Consumer Rights Act contains different rules, including the trader bearing reasonable return costs in relevant cases.

Use a return method that complies with the carrier's current lithium-battery rules. Photograph the condition, serial or IMEI, included accessories and packaging before dispatch. Tracking shows movement of a parcel; it does not by itself prove its contents or condition.

When the parcel is late, missing or damaged

Your contract is normally with the seller, not the courier selected by the seller. Report the problem promptly, keep delivery evidence and do not let the retailer redirect you indefinitely to a carrier with whom you have no contract.

Practical cancellation record

  1. Send a clear cancellation or fault notice in writing.
  2. Identify the order and exact phone.
  3. Keep the message and time sent.
  4. Follow the stated return instructions if lawful and workable.
  5. Record the parcel and retain proof of posting.
  6. Check the refund against every payment, including delivery or separate finance where relevant.
