The cheapest phone to own long term is usually the least expensive device that can reliably complete your tasks for the full planned period. It is not automatically the lowest-priced handset.
Use a long-term screen

Mid-range and previous-generation can both work
A current mid-range phone may offer a long support runway and low repair risk. A discounted previous-generation premium model may offer better durability and resale. Compare the exact devices rather than relying on the category label.
Avoid false economy
Do not buy a marginal battery, insufficient storage or an unsupported bargain unless its limited role and replacement date are deliberate.
Check the repair threshold
Estimate the cost of one battery service and one common accidental repair. A phone can be economical while repairable and become uneconomic when one likely fault approaches a large share of its replacement value.
Do not confuse longevity with endurance
A phone may physically continue to switch on while no longer meeting security, storage, accessibility or performance needs. Use “useful life” rather than the longest possible survival time.
