Recycling and Disposal

Reuse is normally preferable while a phone can be used safely. When it has no sensible resale or donation route, it should enter an electrical-waste collection system rather than household rubbish.

Choose the route

Remove data and accounts first

Recycling does not automatically erase a usable phone. Back up, remove accounts and erase it where the device can be operated safely. If it cannot be erased, ask the receiving service how data-bearing devices are handled and whether certified destruction evidence is available.

Do not remove an integrated battery yourself

Modern phone batteries are commonly bonded inside the device. Prying, bending or puncturing a lithium-ion battery creates a fire risk. Follow the recycler’s instructions and disclose any swelling or damage before transport.

UK take-back framework

Electrical retailers have WEEE responsibilities, including providing a route for customers to dispose of equivalent old household electrical equipment when selling new equipment. Large stores may also have obligations for very small electrical items. The practical route varies, so check the retailer or local authority before travelling.
