Separate the old phone from the old finance

Document the phone, protect the payment and make the handover traceable.

Trading in a phone does not automatically cancel an outstanding device plan. Some programmes apply value towards a balance; others pay separately. Check the remaining device amount, airtime term and trade-in agreement as three distinct figures.

Examples of current routes

Check these documents

  • Remaining device-plan balance.
  • New airtime and device agreements.
  • Trade-in quote and expiry.
  • Condition test and lock requirements.
  • Deadline and proof of return.
  • What happens if inspection fails or the phone is not returned.

Upgrade return is not always a sale

Some network propositions require the old phone to be returned so a remaining balance or early-upgrade condition can be dealt with. That is different from selling an owned handset for cash. Establish whether title transfers, whether any credit is paid to you, and what happens if the device fails inspection or is not returned by the deadline.

Where the value is applied to monthly bills, note when the credit begins. A delay of one or more billing periods can affect affordability even if the total credit is unchanged.

Compare with a normal cash sale

Network convenience can be valuable, but compare the net trade-in with an independent buyer and the new contract’s total cost. Do not let a trade-in bonus determine a tariff choice.

Check the current terms

Network trade-in and upgrade propositions change frequently. Check every named programme, payment route and return condition immediately before acting.
