Test in two stages: inspect and use the phone before erasure, then verify account-lock removal after reset. Paying after only one stage leaves either technical condition or ownership access unchecked.
Before the meeting

- Save the listing and exact claimed model.
- Ask whether any parts were replaced or faults remain.
- Confirm that the seller will remove all accounts and allow a reset check.
- Bring a compatible SIM, charging cable and a way to verify payment.
- Meet where there is time, light and connectivity.
Stage 1: inspect before reset
| Area | Test |
|---|---|
| Identity | Model, storage, serial, every IMEI and region |
| Display | Touch across the screen, brightness, colour, flicker and burn-in |
| Battery | Official health information where available, heat and unexpected shutdown |
| Cameras and sound | Every lens, focus, flash, microphone, earpiece and loudspeaker |
| Connections | Charging, calls, mobile data, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth |
| Controls | Buttons, vibration, biometrics, proximity and rotation |
| Repair history | Parts messages, invoices and related functions |
Stage 2: erase and check activation
Have the seller remove Apple, Google and manufacturer accounts through the official process. After factory reset, begin setup far enough to confirm the phone does not demand the previous owner’s credentials or show organisation management. Do not sign in with your own main account until the purchase is complete.
Match the seller and payment
Record the seller’s identity and a written bill of sale with model, IMEI, price and stated condition. Check payment through the official banking or marketplace service. Never rely on screenshots or a request to send money to an unrelated third party.
Walk away if the test cannot be completed
A low battery, lack of signal, forgotten password or waiting courier may be genuine, but the risk remains yours if you pay. Arrange another inspection or choose another phone.
