Buying From a Mobile Network

A network purchase can be convenient, but convenience should not hide the structure of the deal. The airtime, handset and finance may be separate agreements with different terms, durations and cancellation consequences.

Map the documents before comparing the price

Compare the decision in context, not from one headline number.
Document or chargeQuestion to answer
Airtime contractWhat is the minimum term, allowance and scheduled price change?
Device plan or financeWho is the lender, what is the total payable and when do you own the phone?
Upfront paymentIs it handset contribution, delivery, connection or another charge?
Insurance or add-onIs it optional, who provides it and how is it cancelled?
Upgrade promiseMust the old phone be returned or its remaining balance settled?

Calculate the full term

For new UK contracts entered into from 17 January 2025, any scheduled in-contract rise must be stated upfront in pounds and pence rather than being linked to inflation or expressed as a percentage. Older contracts may differ. Add every known period instead of multiplying only the introductory monthly figure.

Compare the result with buying the same phone outright and adding a suitable SIM-only plan. Keep cashback and trade-in estimates separate until the conditions are met.

Do not confuse unlocked with paid off

UK mobile providers have been prohibited from selling locked handsets since 17 December 2021. An unlocked phone can accept a compatible SIM from another network, but this does not remove any remaining airtime or device-finance obligation.

Before agreeing

  • Read the contract summary and the full documents.
  • Check whether one cancellation automatically cancels the other agreements.
  • Confirm ownership, early settlement and early upgrade terms.
  • Save the offer page and all promised extras.
  • Use the Phone Contract Cost Guide to normalise the figures.

Check the cancellation map

A distance sale may provide a cancellation route, but the airtime, handset sale, credit agreement and insurance can have separate notices and return requirements. Ask what must be returned, who pays postage, when service stops and how an already transferred number is handled. Do not assume that cancelling airtime automatically cancels device finance.

Check the end of the agreement before the beginning

  • What happens after the airtime minimum term?
  • Does the device payment finish on the same date?
  • Is a final or balloon payment due?
  • Can the handset be traded in while a balance remains?
  • What is the early settlement figure and how is it requested?

A network deal can be sensible when the full term is competitive and the combined support route is valuable. It is not automatically better because the upfront payment is low or an upgrade is available.
