Start with ownership and condition
Before offering a phone for sale, confirm that it is yours to sell and check whether any device finance, company ownership, insurance claim or account lock still affects it. Record the exact model, storage, IMEI, faults, repair history and cosmetic marks. A clean listing and a strong evidence trail begin before the phone is advertised.
Value is not just the headline price
A private buyer may pay more than a trade-in service, but fees, time, payment risk, postage and the possibility of a dispute all reduce the real return. A store-credit trade-in may look generous while tying you to a more expensive new purchase. Compare the net result, not one number.
Protect data before value
Back up anything you need, remove Apple, Google and manufacturer accounts, disable activation locks, remove SIM and memory cards, and use the device's supported erase process. Do not hand over a phone that still opens into your account, and do not assume that deleting photographs individually is equivalent to a factory reset.
